Urban planning design competition, 2005 · Winner

This urban planning project is located in Qingdao, a rapidly growing region at the east coast of China and place of the Olympic sailing competitions 2008.

K+P's design succeeded in an urban planning competition against Chinese competitors.

The new urban quarter, a few miles from the actual downtown zone, will give home to about 60.000 inhabitants, including the relocation of 3.000 villagers. The site includes a total area of 1.6 million m² and a net building ground of about 1 million m². Showing a density of 1.6 to 2.2, it provides a total gross floor area of about 1.9 million m², the far majority of it for residential use.

The design is blending European ideas of urbanism and landscape architecture with specific Chinese demands, deriving from traditional Chinese culture and an enormous pressure for urban development. It aims at a sustainable urban structure of public and private spaces and a both ecological and recreative structure of open spaces.

The final solution has been the result of intense on-site discussions in Qingdao with local authorities, clients, property developers and planners. The design of K+P has been accepted as master-plan and will be developed by K+P further on up to the construction stage.
