University Wurzburg am Hubland, New Chemical Center with laboratories and research facilities
2005 – 2009
The new building for the Institute for pharmaceutics and food chemistry on the campus of the University of Wurzburg Hubland is the first part of the renovation of the chemical complex. It is divided into three functional areas on four floors: The offices of the chairs in the north, the large-scale areas for practical training in the central section and the three-aligned east-west-oriented laboratory and research areas.
The five-storey building – on one level and accessible – is linked to the old building by a con-necting building. The façade consists of two shells: The light curtain wall is made of steel and glass elements, the surfaces were finished in gray and blue tones. In addition to its function as a sunscreen and maintenance balcony the outer shell generates a contemporary appearance. The wood-aluminum façade is orientated towards the outside, while the inside spaces are dominated by the slender wooden profiles, thus providing a warm atmosphere in the technical areas. The south façade is shaded by photovoltaics that are integrated into glass louvers.
